How to Sound Like Don Diablo

Get that Don Diablo, Hexagon sound in this step-by-step video tutorial.

Don Diablo has been storming the world with his energetic future house for the past few years, and today we look at how to get that sound. Yes – developing your own style is SO important – but it helps (MASSIVELY) to breakdown what other (better) producers are doing, to learn some of their tricks which you can then incorporate into your own music.

That being said, let's dive right in...

(I actually wanted to make this video 5 minutes, but there was too much good stuff to share, so it ended up being a packed full 20 minutes. Grab some tea, and lock in!)

I've done this in Ableton Live, but it’s just as simple in FL Studio, Logic Pro…in fact, any DAW.

It’s mostly using stock plugins, but there are a couple of premium ones used (Sylenth1 and Massive). We go into sound design, music theory, mixing and mastering, so there's plenty to get your teeth into.

In this step-by-step tutorial, we cover:

PART 1: THE DON DIABLO DROP

1. Music Theory (Creating the Melody) - 01:17 (For more info on how to create melodies, check this out)
2. Creating the Groove - 03:41
3. The Kick & Bass - 04:34
3. Drum Programming - 07:41
4. Sound Design - 10:08
5. Vocals - 13:31

PART 2: BREAK & BUILD

1. Music Theory (Piano Chords) - 14:18 (For more info on how to create chords, check this out)
2. The Synth Riff - 17:33
3. FX, Impacts & Uprisers - 19:30
4. Vocal Chops - 20:05

PART 3: MIXING & MASTERING

1. Buss Processing - 20:43
2. The Master Chain - 21:39 (For more info on how to master, check this out)

We also have a quick look at:

- Sidechain Compression
- Auxiliary Channels
- Saturation
- Distortion
- Compression
- Signal routing
- Additive EQ
- Surgical EQ technique
- Layering
